Mount Pilatus FAQs
Fares, seat reservations, passes, the 2026 season, the two ways up, children, dogs and the weather at 2,132 metres. Choosing a Mount Pilatus guided tours? The answers below settle most of what you need first.
Three answers matter more than the rest. Which way does your fare take you up and down? Some ride the whole loop, some only one side, and the flights never land. Does the boat still run on your date? It stops on 18 October 2026. And who is with you: a guide, or nobody? Every tour card says all three.
How much does a Mount Pilatus tour cost?
The railway's own round-trip tickets run from $72 to $144 per person. Guided days from Lucerne start at $154, the coach day from Zurich is $207, and private days start at $678 per person.
What is the Golden Round Trip?
The Golden Round Trip is the railway company's loop from Lucerne: the boat to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel railway up, then the Dragon Ride cableway and the panorama gondola down to Kriens, and bus 1 back. You can ride it in either direction, and in 2026 it costs CHF 119.80 in second class.
Do I need a seat reservation for the cogwheel railway?
It is not obligatory, but the railway company recommends one, and without it you may wait for a later railcar on busy days. The self-guided tickets leave it out, so book a seat for a set time once you have your ticket. You can move the slot up to 30 minutes before departure, but you cannot cancel it.
Does the Swiss Travel Pass cover Mount Pilatus?
No. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the boat, the train and the bus on the loop and gives 50% off the mountain, so you buy only the return over it: CHF 42 in 2026 instead of CHF 84. With a Half Fare Card the whole Golden Round Trip costs CHF 59.90.
Is Mount Pilatus open in winter?
The Kriens side is: the panorama gondola and the Dragon Ride run all year except for maintenance. The cogwheel railway runs only from 11 May to 29 November 2026, so from 30 November you go up and down from Kriens.
When is the Kriens cableway closed in 2026?
On 30 and 31 March, and from 19 October to 27 November 2026, for maintenance. In that window the summit is reached only by the cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad, up and down.
When does the boat to Alpnachstad stop running?
The Lucerne to Alpnachstad boat ends its season on 18 October 2026. From 19 October the guided half-days and the Zurich coach day go up and down by cogwheel instead, with a CHF 20 lunch voucher in place of the cruise.
How high is Mount Pilatus?
The railway gives Pilatus Kulm, the summit station, as 2,132 metres, an older published figure it still uses. Surveyed, the highest peak is the Tomlishorn, at about 2,128 metres and a short walk from the station.
How long do you need at the top?
Two to three hours is enough for a meal, one of the peaks and the Dragon Path. The guided half-days from Lucerne give about 1 hour 30 minutes of free time, and the whole loop on your own takes about 4 hours 30 minutes.
How do you get to the valley stations from Lucerne?
Take bus 1 from the railway station to Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus (about 12 minutes) and walk up to the gondola. For the cogwheel, take the train to Alpnachstad (16 minutes) or the boat from the quay in front of the station.
Can you visit Mount Pilatus from Zurich in a day?
Yes. The train reaches Lucerne in 41 minutes, and a guided coach day from the Sihlquai bus station takes 10 hours, with about an hour in Lucerne and 1 hour 30 minutes at the top.
Is it the steepest cogwheel railway in the world?
Yes. The line from Alpnachstad climbs at up to 48 per cent, and it has run since 1889. The ride takes 27 minutes up and 33 minutes down.
Which way round is best?
Boat first, then the cogwheel up, works best for most: the boats run less often, so you can book a cogwheel seat that fits your crossing. Coming down by gondola also makes the walk to the bus in Kriens a downhill one.
Can I cancel a Mount Pilatus tour?
All the day trips and tickets refund in full up to 24 hours before the start. The three-day private tour from Lucerne refunds in full only up to 6 days before.
Is a guide with you on the summit?
On the private days and the small groups, yes. On the guided coach days the guide rides up with you and the time at the top is free time, and the railway's own tickets are unguided.
What is the Silver Round Trip?
The Silver Round Trip is the same loop with the train between Lucerne and Alpnachstad in place of the boat. It costs CHF 94.20 in second class in 2026, against CHF 119.80 for the Golden Round Trip.
What happens to a tour booked after 18 October?
The guided half-days and the Zurich day go up and down by cogwheel with a lunch voucher until 27 November. The railway's loop tickets have no boat or cableway to ride in that window, so book a one-side return instead.
What is there to do at the top?
Climb the Oberhaupt (about 10 minutes) or the Esel (about 30 minutes), and walk the Dragon Path through the rock in about 20 minutes. Dragon World is free, and there are two hotels with restaurants.
What is Fräkmüntegg?
Fräkmüntegg is the middle station on the Kriens side, where the gondola meets the Dragon Ride. Its Fräkigaudi, 1,350 metres long, is the longest summer toboggan run in Switzerland, and the rope park next to it takes children from age 8.
Can you stay overnight on Pilatus?
Yes. Hotel Pilatus-Kulm is a four-star house opened in 1890, and the three-star Hotel Bellevue stands beside it; a night up top gives you sunset and sunrise without the day crowds.
What if it is cloudy on Pilatus?
The lifts run in cloud and stop only in storms, but the view can be gone. In autumn the fog often sits below about 800 metres with sun on the summit, so judge the day by the summit forecast, not the sky over Lucerne.
Do children pay on Mount Pilatus?
Children aged 6 to 15 pay half fare: CHF 42 for a return from Kriens or Alpnachstad in 2026. With an SBB Junior Travelcard or a Children's Co-Travelcard they ride free.
Is Mount Pilatus wheelchair accessible?
The cogwheel railway, the gondolas and the cableway take wheelchairs, and the summit has lifts and step-free toilets. Register by phone a day ahead; a manual wheelchair should go up from Kriens.
Can I take my dog up Pilatus?
Yes, with its own ticket. It costs CHF 14 for a full route and CHF 3.50 for a single section in 2026.
Where do the guided tours from Lucerne meet?
The coach half-days meet at the Alpenquai coach park, the small groups at the railway station, and the hike at the Tourist Information by track 3. Check the meeting point on your own booking the day before.
Can I do Pilatus and Rigi in one day?
Yes, on a 10-hour private day from Lucerne that crosses the lake by boat to Vitznau for Rigi. It is a long day, so start early.
Can you visit Mount Pilatus from Basel?
Yes. The train reaches Lucerne in about an hour, and the small-group and private days from Basel take 7 to 9 hours with the train to Lucerne in the fare.
Does the helicopter flight land on Pilatus?
No. The helicopter flight from Bern-Belp passes Pilatus without landing, and its stop is at Villa Honegg on the Bürgenstock. Lunch there is not in the fare.
Is the paragliding flight on Pilatus?
No. The tandem flight takes off above Engelberg, with Lake Lucerne and Pilatus in view. The cable car to the take-off costs CHF 20 to 30 extra.
Does a ticket let you skip the line?
No. A prepaid ticket saves the queue at the ticket window, not the wait to board: the cogwheel seat reservation only gives you a set time, and everyone rides the same cabins.
How long is the cogwheel ride?
27 minutes up and 33 minutes down, on a line 4,618 metres long that climbs 1,635 metres. Each railcar seats 46.
How long is the Dragon Ride?
3 minutes 39 seconds from Fräkmüntegg to the summit, in cabins that hold 55. It opened in 1956 and was modernised in 2015.
Is Mount Pilatus worth it?
For a first visit to Lucerne, yes: the guided days score 4.6 to 4.8 out of 5 across thousands of ratings, and the loop is a lake, the steepest cogwheel railway and a cableway in one half-day. Go on a clear day if you can.
