Visiting Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus is the mountain above Lucerne, and its summit station, Pilatus Kulm, stands at 2,132 metres. You go up by cogwheel railway from one side or by gondola and cableway from the other. Before you pick from the Mount Pilatus guided tours, three things decide your day: which way you ride, whether the boat still runs on your date, and who is with you at the top.

A day at 2,132 metres

Most visitors start in Lucerne and ride a loop. The classic version is the Golden Round Trip: the boat across the lake to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel railway up, then the cableway and the gondola down to Kriens, and a city bus back. You can ride it either way round. Here is the same loop with the train in place of the boat, stage by stage:

Allow half a day for the loop and a little more if you want lunch at the top. From Zurich the train to Lucerne takes 41 minutes each way, and from Basel or Bern about an hour. How to get there has the connections from every city, and the loop page covers the direction and the boat.

Up from Kriens or up from Alpnachstad

The mountain has two sides, and each has its own lift. On the Kriens side a panorama gondola climbs through the woods, past Krienseregg, to the middle station at Fräkmüntegg, where a big cableway, the Dragon Ride, takes you up the rock face to the top. On the Alpnachstad side the cogwheel railway climbs straight up the cliffs from the lake.

The two sides are not open on the same days. In 2026 the Kriens lifts close from 19 October to 27 November for maintenance, and the cogwheel stops for the winter after 29 November. Check both against your date on the seasonal schedule before you book anything.

The seat reservation nobody sells you

If you ride the loop with the boat, reserve the cogwheel for a time after your boat lands. The boats run less often than the railcars, so fit the seat to the crossing, not the other way round. On a guided day, check that the seat is in your fare: the small-group day from Basel lists it.

When the cloud sits on the summit

The lifts run in cloud and stop only in storms, but the view can vanish for an hour or a day. Autumn often works the other way. MeteoSwiss describes the Swiss lowlands under a grey layer of fog from mid-September to March, with clear sky above it, so you can leave a grey Lucerne and step out into sunshine at the top.

• Book with free cancellation, then decide on the forecast the day before.
• Cancel at least 24 hours ahead if the summit forecast is poor.
• In autumn, judge by the summit forecast, not the sky over the lake.
• Bring a warm layer: it is often around 10 degrees cooler at the top than by the lake.

Eating on the mountain

Most tours leave lunch out, so plan for it. The summit has two hotels, and each has a restaurant. Hotel Pilatus-Kulm, a four-star house that opened in 1890, serves sit-down meals in its old hall; the three-star Bellevue next door runs a self-service counter. The guided hike from Lucerne puts a barbecue lunch in the fare.

If you ride a guided half-day from Lucerne between 19 October and 29 November 2026, the fare carries a CHF 20 lunch voucher in place of the boat.

Children, wheelchairs and dogs

• Children aged 6 to 15 pay half fare, and ride free with the Junior or the Children's Co-Travelcard.
• Dragon World at the top, with interactive displays on the dragon legends, is free.
• At Fräkmüntegg, the Fräkigaudi is the longest summer toboggan run in Switzerland, open April to October in good weather.
• The rope park beside it takes children from age 8: CHF 30 for adults and CHF 22 for children, with the lift ticket extra.
• The cogwheel, the gondolas and the cableway take wheelchairs. The railway's own tickets say a wheelchair must be booked ahead, so phone before you travel.
• Dogs ride with their own ticket: CHF 14 for a full route, CHF 3.50 for a section.

A ticket or a tour

You can go up with nothing but the railway's ticket, and from Lucerne that costs less than a guided day. The difference is who sorts out the boat, the seat and the bus, and who is with you on the way. A Swiss Travel Pass or a Half Fare Card halves the railway fare; it does not make the mountain free.
