The Golden Round Trip is the classic day from Lucerne: a boat across the lake, the cogwheel railway up, and the cableway and gondola down. It is the loop behind almost every Mount Pilatus guided tours, and in 2026 it exists only from 11 May to 18 October.
Four lifts and a boat, in one direction or the other. The railway company sells it as one ticket, valid for the day, and the order below is the one most travellers choose.

The boat lands at Alpnachstad right by the cogwheel, and an underground path takes you straight to the valley station. At the other end the gondola stops in Kriens, and you walk down to the bus stop for bus 1 back to Lucerne station.
You can ride the loop either way. The difference is which part of your day is fixed.
You pick a sailing, then reserve a cogwheel seat for after it lands. The boat is the leg with the fewest departures, so you plan around it once. Travellers who went this way also found the walk to the Kriens bus easy: about a kilometre, and downhill. This is our choice for a first visit.
You start with no fixed time, up the Kriens side at your own pace. The catch comes at the end: you must be down at Alpnachstad for a boat, and the sailings back are few. The walk from the Kriens bus stop is uphill, and travellers say the signs are poor.
The Silver Round Trip is the same loop with the train between Lucerne and Alpnachstad. The train takes 16 minutes and runs about every half hour, so you are never tied to a sailing. It costs CHF 25.60 less in second class, and with a Half Fare Card it costs CHF 47.10. What you give up is the hour on the lake.

Choose the Silver Round Trip when time is short, or after the boat stops on 18 October. Choose the Golden when the weather is good and you want the lake as well as the mountain. The full fare list, passes and children are on the tickets page.
Three things must all run for the loop to work: the boat, the cogwheel and the Kriens lifts. In 2026 they overlap only from spring to mid-October.

You can ride the loop with nothing but the ticket. It is easy to follow, and the only things you arrange are the seat and the bus. A guided half-day costs more and adds a guide, transport to the start, and the seat. Here is how the options compare:
