Mount Pilatus Without a Tour: Fares, Trains and Passes
You do not need a tour to reach the top of Mount Pilatus. The railway sells every route itself, and the buses, trains and boats leave from outside Lucerne station. Can you do Mount Pilatus on your own?
Yes, and most of the loop is simple. You ride a bus or a boat or a train to a valley station, a lift to the summit, and another lift down the other side. The railway sells the whole thing as one ticket, valid for one day, and you can go either way round.
Three things trip people up: the seat on the cogwheel, the walk from the bus in Kriens, and the autumn dates. Each has its own section below.
Which ticket do you need?
The railway's 2026 price list gives you these, adult fare first. The second column is the fare with a Half Fare Card, and for children aged 6 to 15.

The loop with the boat is the Golden Round Trip; with the train instead it is the Silver Round Trip. Both include the bus between Kriens and Lucerne. Round trips are sold from May to October, and the boat itself stops on 18 October 2026.
How do you reserve the cogwheel seat?
You reserve it separately, on the railway's website, for a set departure from Alpnachstad or the summit. It is not obligatory, but without one you may wait on a busy day. The railway recommends one at weekends in good weather and at lunchtime during the week.
- Book it once you know your boat or train, so the times line up.
- You can change the slot up to 30 minutes before departure.
- You cannot cancel it.
The cost of skipping it is real: one traveller without a seat waited two hours at Alpnachstad for a railcar with room.
How do you get from Lucerne to the start?
To Kriens, for the gondola: take bus 1, direction Obernau, from in front of the station. Ride about 12 minutes to Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus, then walk up to the gondola, about a kilometre.
To Alpnachstad, for the cogwheel: take the S5 train, direction Giswil, 16 minutes, about every half hour. Or take the boat from pier 2, opposite the station, until 18 October 2026; an underground path joins the pier to the cogwheel.

Which direction is easier?
Boat first, then the cogwheel up, then down to Kriens. The boats run less often than the trains, so you book a cogwheel seat to fit your crossing. And the walk to the bus in Kriens is downhill at the end of the day, rather than uphill at the start.
Going the other way works too. It makes sense if you want the gondola ride first, or if the boat times do not suit your morning.
What does a pass save?
No pass makes the mountain free. The Swiss Travel Pass carries you free on the boat, the train and the bus of the loop, and gives 50% off the mountain itself, so you pay CHF 42 for the return over it. The Half Fare Card and the GA give half price, which makes the loop with the boat CHF 59.90.
- Eurail and Interrail: 50% off the mountain routes.
- Lucerne Travel Pass: listed by the railway as free travel on the mountain.
- Junior Travelcard or Children's Co-Travelcard: children ride free with an adult.
- Day passes and the Bernese Oberland Pass: not valid on Pilatus.
- Groups of 10 or more: 30% off, at the counter on the day only.
What does doing it yourself cost?
Here is the same loop bought three ways. The counter fares are the railway's own, in francs; the booked fares are what you pay ahead, in dollars. Compare within a column, not across.

With a Swiss Travel Pass, going alone costs least. Without a pass, the counter and the booked ticket buy the same loop; the booked one is paid before you travel and refunds in full up to 24 hours ahead. A guided day costs more because the guide and the coach are in it.
Where do people get lost?
At the Kriens end. The walk from the Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus stop to the gondola is about a kilometre, uphill on the way there, and the signs are few. Follow the signs for the gondola and allow 15 minutes. Coming down, it is downhill and easier.
At Alpnachstad, the boat pier connects to the cogwheel by an underground path, so there is nothing to find. The only wait there is for a railcar, which is what the seat reservation is for.
What if the boat is not running?
From 19 October 2026 the boat has stopped. Take the train to Alpnachstad instead: the Silver Round Trip is the same loop with the train. But from 19 October to 27 November the Kriens lifts are closed as well, so there is no loop at all. You ride the cogwheel up and down from Alpnachstad on a return.
From 30 November the cogwheel has stopped too, and you go up from Kriens by gondola and cableway. The dates for each lift are on the Mount Pilatus seasonal schedule.
When is a guide worth it?
When the logistics would spoil the day for you. If you are coming from Zurich or Basel without a rail pass, a tour removes the changes. If you are travelling with older relatives, a guide keeps the group together through five kinds of transport. And if you want the story of the mountain as you ride, a guide gives you that.
