Coach to Kriens, gondola and Dragon Ride up
The day starts at the Best of Switzerland Tours bus park on Alpenquai, on the lake shore, where your guide waits with a red flag. The coach takes about half an hour to Kriens. From there the panorama gondolas climb through forest and meadow to Fräkmüntegg, a ride of at least 18 minutes in one of 132 four-seat cabins, past the middle station at Krienseregg.
At Fräkmüntegg you change to the Dragon Ride, the aerial cableway that has run to the summit since 1956. It takes 3 minutes 39 seconds and ends at Pilatus Kulm, 2,132 metres above sea level. An hour and a half on Pilatus Kulm
Best of Switzerland gives you about 90 minutes of free time at the top, and the guide leaves you to it: some guests expected more guiding than this part of the day has. Plan it before you arrive. The Dragon Path, a walk cut through the rock from the end of the Panorama Gallery, takes about 20 minutes. The Oberhaupt viewpoint is about 10 minutes up, the Esel about 30.
Lunch is not in the fare. The restaurants of Hotel Pilatus-Kulm, which has stood at the top since 1890, and the self-service Bellevue are both at the station. Guests who used the time well managed a sit-down lunch, a peak and the Dragon Path in the 90 minutes.
Down the 48% cogwheel
You leave the summit on the cogwheel railway, the steepest in the world, which opened in 1889 and climbs at up to 48 per cent. Going down takes 33 minutes, to Alpnachstad on the lake. The ride is in the fare, and your guide travels down with the group.
The boat back to pier 2
At Alpnachstad an underground path leads from the railway to the landing stage. The boat takes about an hour across Lake Lucerne and ties up at pier 2, opposite Lucerne railway station, where the tour ends, so you finish the day beside the trains and buses rather than back at the coach park. Boat, cogwheel, cableway and gondolas together make the Golden Round Trip, the loop Pilatus-Bahnen also sells as a ticket on its own.
After 18 October: the autumn day
The boat to Alpnachstad stops for the season after 18 October 2026, and the gondolas and Dragon Ride close for their overhaul from 19 October to 27 November. Best of Switzerland keeps running: in that window you go up and down by cogwheel, and a lunch voucher worth up to CHF 20 replaces the boat. On 28 and 29 November you go up by cableway and down by cogwheel, still with the voucher. Book the autumn option for those dates; it is the same guide and the same free time at the top.

Who this suits: a Lucerne base and a first time up
Book this if
You are staying in Lucerne, it is your first time on the mountain, and you want the lifts, the boat and the changes handled for you in half a day. It suits couples, families with older children and anyone who would rather spend the summit time on their own than follow a flag.
Book something else if
You want the guide beside you at the top: the small-group day from Lucerne, for up to 15, spends about an hour at Fräkmüntegg and two on the summit. You would rather go at your own pace: the railway's own loop ticket is the same loop with no group. You use a wheelchair: this day is not suitable. Alpenquai, the red flag by the lake
Meet at Bus Parking Landenberg on Alpenquai, the Best of Switzerland Tours coach park on the lake shore. Wait on the pavement; your guide holds a red flag with the company's name on it. Your booking confirmation gives the start time for your date.
The tour ends at pier 2, the landing stage opposite Lucerne railway station. From the autumn option on, when there is no boat, the operator's confirmation says where the day finishes.
Know before you go
- Bring a passport or ID card. The operator asks for it on the day.
- Food is on you. Eat at the summit; food and drink are not allowed in the coach.
- Not for wheelchair users. Choose a ticket and register with Pilatus-Bahnen instead.
- No pets. Assistance dogs are allowed.
- Dress for the top. It is colder at 2,132 metres than on the lake; bring a layer and sunscreen.
- The season changes the day. After 18 October there is no boat; the autumn option swaps in a lunch voucher.
