Sihlquai in the morning
The day starts at the Best of Switzerland Tours counter at Sihlquai Bus Station, on Limmatstrasse beside Zurich main station. Check in at least 15 minutes before the coach leaves, with the QR code from your booking. The drive to Lucerne takes about an hour and three quarters.

An hour in Lucerne
The coach drives past the Jesuit Church, the Chapel Bridge and the Town Hall, then leaves you an hour of free time in the old town. It is enough for a walk across the bridge and a coffee by the river, and not much more: the one thing guests ask for on this day is more time in Lucerne. If the city matters as much as the mountain, stay the night and take the guided half-day from Lucerne the next morning.
Up from Kriens
From Lucerne the coach takes about half an hour to Kriens. The panorama gondolas climb to Fräkmüntegg, at least 18 minutes, and the Dragon Ride cableway takes 3 minutes 39 seconds to Pilatus Kulm at 2,132 metres. You get about an hour and a half at the top. The Esel is about 30 minutes up and back, the Dragon Path about 20, and the restaurants are in the station.
Cloud sits on Pilatus on some days. Guests caught in it still had lunch at the top and climbed to the summit in the fog. Bring a layer for the top whatever the forecast in Zurich.
Down to Alpnachstad and across the lake
The cogwheel railway takes 33 minutes down to Alpnachstad at a gradient of up to 48 per cent, the steepest in the world. The boat then crosses Lake Lucerne to the city in about an hour, and the coach takes about another hour back to Sihlquai. Your guide keeps the group together at every change, and announces each stop in more than one language.
From 19 October to 27 November 2026 the gondolas and cableway are shut for their overhaul, so the autumn option goes up and down by cogwheel; the boat stops after 18 October, and a lunch voucher worth up to CHF 20 replaces it until 29 November.

You are staying in Zurich, you have one day for central Switzerland, and you want both Lucerne and the mountain without planning trains, boats and lifts. It suits first-time visitors, Spanish speakers who want a guide in their own language, and families with teenagers.

You want more than an hour in Lucerne: take the train, which reaches Lucerne in about 41 minutes, and book the guided half-day from Lucerne. You want your own guide and your own pace: the private day from Zurich is for up to 12. You use a wheelchair: this day is not suitable. Meet at the Best of Switzerland Tours counter at Sihlquai Bus Station, Limmatstrasse 2, the coach station on the river side of Zurich main station. Check in at least 15 minutes before departure with your booking's QR code, printed or on your phone. The confirmation gives the start time for your date.
The day ends back at Sihlquai in the evening. Hotel pickup is not part of it.
Know before you go
- Bring a passport or ID card. The operator asks for it at check-in.
- Choose your language. The summer and autumn options each run in English or Spanish.
- Food is on you. Eat in Lucerne or at the top; food and drink are not allowed in the coach.
- Not for wheelchair users. Look at the tickets and register with Pilatus-Bahnen instead.
- A long day. Ten hours, about three of them in the coach.
